San Diego Harley-Davidson was founded in 1915. Its first location was on Kettner, not too far from our Little Italy location today. The Dealership moved to 949 India Street around 1929. The legacy of San Diego Harley-Davidson began however when it was bought by Leonard Andres and under his guidance became perhaps the finest motorcycle dealership anywhere. Racing was a passion, especially after World War II and San Diego Harley-Davidson was at the heart of it all. Leonard’s son Brad Andres led the list of racing achievements with three Daytona 200 victories, but there was a lot more. 1976 began a period of hard times for Harley and sadly for San Diego Harley-Davidson.
New York Myke
In 1993 the business was purchased and ran by New York Myke Shelby whose goal was to bring back the spirit, the patriotism, and the intensity that made San Diego Harley-Davidson the marquee it once was. A tradition began of things as diverse as being on the forefront of motorcyclist’s rights and having Saturday barbeques that look more like parties and celebrations. New York Myke always an activist was a Board Member of Abate of California and became its Executive Director in 1996.
